Your license plates for your vehicle in Ohio are issued with the registration. If you need your vehicle to be registered under another person or if you want to use the license plates with another vehicle, you have to make changes to your registration. You can do so by transferring the plates through the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. While the BMV offers some online services, license plate transfers cannot be done on the web.
Download and print the form BMV 4809 from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles website. The form is for duplicate registration, replacement plates and transfer of plates.
Complete the form with the license plate information, title information and owner information. Be sure to select “transfer” in the fee section on page two.
Submit the completed form with fee payment to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. As of July 2010, the fee is $4.87. If the title is also changing to a new owner, the new certificate of title must also be included. You can mail the items to
